Root Ingress in Caldicot: Why the Drain Kept Blocking

A homeowner in Caldicot had called out three different drainage companies in eighteen months. Each time, the drain was rodded or jetted. Each time, it blocked again within a few months.

When we ran a CCTV survey, the problem was obvious. A section of clay pipe under the front garden had root ingress at three separate joints. The roots had not just entered the pipe — they had formed a fibrous mat inside the bore, catching everything that passed through. Rodding pushed through it temporarily. Jetting cleared it for a while. Neither addressed the joints, so the roots grew back.

We replaced the damaged section of pipe. Not the whole run. Just the section where the roots had entered. That meant one excavation, one new length of pipe, and a proper seal at both ends.

The homeowner has not called anyone back since. That is the difference between clearing a blockage and fixing a drain.

Soakaway Blocked in Langstone: When the Water Has Nowhere to Go

A soakaway in Langstone had stopped draining entirely. The homeowner noticed standing water in the garden after rain and assumed the drain itself was blocked.

It wasn't. The soakaway was blocked.

Soakaways are common in Langstone because of the soil conditions and the age of the properties. They work by letting water disperse into the ground. When they silt up, or when the surrounding soil becomes saturated, they stop working. The water has nowhere to go, so it backs up into the garden.

We unblocked the soakaway and cleared the inlet pipe. The homeowner now knows what to check if it happens again — and they know that if it does, the soakaway itself may need replacing rather than just clearing.

Most people don't know they have a soakaway until it stops working. If you have standing water in your garden after rain, and the drains themselves are clear, the soakaway is the first thing to check.

Gully Drain in Portskewett: The One Everyone Forgets

A gully drain in Portskewett was overflowing every time it rained. The homeowner had cleared the visible debris from the top of the gully, but the water still backed up.

The problem was further down. The gully trap and the pipe beneath it were blocked with silt and grit that had built up over years. The top of the gully looked clear. The bottom was solid.

We unblocked the gully and the pipe run. It took less than an hour. The homeowner said they had been putting up with it for two years because they assumed it was a bigger job.

Gully drains are the most neglected part of most drainage systems. They sit outside, collect everything the wind blows in, and get ignored until they flood. If your gully overflows after rain, it is almost never the top that is blocked. It is the trap and the pipe beneath it.

What These Three Jobs Have in Common

None of them were fixed by rodding alone. None of them needed a full drain replacement. All three needed someone to actually look at what was happening inside the pipe before deciding what to do.

That is the only real difference between a drain that keeps blocking and a drain that gets fixed.
